Belmont baseball achieved a 2-0 shutout victory over Valparaiso on Apr. 25 at Emory G. Bauer Field, evening the series with a strong pitching and defensive performance.
The win is notable as Belmont’s first shutout of the season, improving their record to 16-27 overall and 7-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Jake Maddox hit a two-RBI double, bringing home Brady Holbrook and Mike Sprockett for what would be the only runs of the game.
Ridge Harvey started on the mound for Belmont but exited at the start of the second inning due to injury. Zane Brown then pitched eight innings in relief, allowing just two hits, striking out six batters, and giving up one walk while keeping Valparaiso off the scoreboard. Brown threw only 93 pitches during his outing.
Defensively, Belmont committed no errors and limited Valparaiso to three hits with four runners left on base. The Beacons were unable to advance any runner past second base throughout the game. Despite a complete-game effort from Valparaiso’s Connor Lockwood—who allowed only two unearned runs—Belmont’s timely hitting proved decisive.
With this result, Belmont returns to an even conference record as they continue their season.
