Belmont defeated Bradley in a high-scoring game on May 3, winning 12-11 at E.S. Rose Park.
The win was notable for its dramatic swings, as Belmont built an early lead before falling behind and then coming back to secure the victory in their final at-bat. The result keeps Belmont competitive ahead of an important series against Southern Illinois.
Belmont started strong by scoring five runs in the first inning, with Charlie Davis and Landon Godsey contributing key hits. The team extended their lead to 9-0 by the third inning, but Bradley responded with an eleven-run fourth inning to take an 11-9 advantage. After this setback, Belmont’s bullpen stabilized the game and prevented further scoring from Bradley.
In the eighth inning, Belmont rallied to tie the score at 11-11. In the bottom of the ninth, Davis drew a leadoff walk and Godsey hit a double to put runners on base. Mike Sprockett then hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Davis to score the winning run.
Godsey led Belmont’s offense with four hits and four runs batted in. Davis and Cavan McMeans each had three hits, while Jake Maddox added three hits and two runs batted in. Despite giving up eleven runs in one inning, Belmont’s pitching staff kept Bradley scoreless over the last five innings.
Looking ahead, Belmont will play Southern Illinois next weekend as both teams are tied for sixth place in their conference standings.
