Belmont falls short against Central Michigan despite late rally

In a game played in Nashville, the Belmont Bruins lost 6-4 to Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The loss moves Belmont’s record to 2-4 for the season, while Central Michigan improves to 4-2.

Central Michigan scored first in the opening inning. Belmont responded in the second when JD Whitworth singled and stole second base before Mike Sprockett brought him home with an RBI single. Landon Godsey then hit a two-out double that drove in two more runs, giving Belmont a 3-1 lead.

Central Michigan tied the game with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and took a narrow lead of 4-3 in the fifth. Pitchers Lake Morris and McKale Stevenson helped keep Belmont close, but errors by the Bruins in the eighth allowed Central Michigan to increase their lead to 6-3.

Belmont tried to rally in the ninth inning. Isaac VanderWoude walked and stole second base, followed by Cavan McMeans hitting an RBI double to reduce the deficit. However, Central Michigan closed out the win with a final strikeout from Stumpf.

Notable performances for Belmont included Landon Godsey going 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Cavan McMeans finishing 1-for-5 with an RBI double late in the game, Mike Sprockett contributing an RBI single and stolen base, and B. Langlotz leading with three hits plus a stolen base.

Next up for Belmont is a matchup against Lipscomb University on Tuesday at Ken Dugan Field as part of their cross-town rivalry series known as “Battle of the Boulevard.” First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
