The Belmont University softball team secured a 4–0 win over Illinois State University in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on May 7 in Carbondale, Illinois. The victory marked a strong start for Belmont as they advanced further into the tournament.

This game is significant because it demonstrates Belmont’s pitching strength and overall team performance as they pursue a championship run in the conference tournament.

Belmont’s senior pitcher responded to her previous loss against Illinois State by delivering one of the most dominant performances in MVC Tournament history. She opened with eight consecutive strikeouts and finished with a total of 17, tying for the second-most ever recorded in an MVC Tournament game. Her efforts resulted in her thirteenth shutout this season and helped Belmont earn its seventeenth team shutout.

Offensively, Belmont broke through in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field, taking a 1–0 lead. The Bruins continued their momentum later that inning, adding another run after key hits and a sacrifice fly extended their advantage to 2–0. In the sixth inning, additional singles and sacrifice flies brought two more runs across home plate, sealing the final score at 4–0.

On defense, Johnson allowed just two hits without issuing any walks across seven innings while striking out seventeen batters on only ninety pitches.

Looking ahead, Belmont will play either Southern Illinois University or Murray State University on Friday, May 8 at Charlotte West Stadium for an opportunity to advance to the MVC Tournament Championship game. Games will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available through GoBelmontBruins.com.
