Belmont University’s baseball team split a doubleheader against Central Michigan at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville on Friday. The Bruins lost the first game 9-3 but rebounded to win the second game 5-2.
After the doubleheader, Belmont’s record stands at 2-4 for the season, while Central Michigan is now 4-2.
In the opening contest, Central Michigan pulled away with a six-run fourth inning. Although Belmont collected more hits than their opponent (13 to 9), they struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position. Belmont’s offense started to gain momentum in the fifth inning when Cavan McMeans doubled and was driven home by a single from Morgan. Later that inning, Charlie Davis added an RBI single. K. Coleman contributed with a pinch-hit single in the seventh and eventually scored Belmont’s final run of the game.
Charlie Davis finished Game 1 going 2-for-4 with an RBI, Cavan McMeans went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and K. Coleman was 1-for-1 with a run.
The Bruins responded in Game 2 behind strong pitching from Tate Marland and timely hitting during the fifth inning. Trailing by two runs entering the bottom of the fifth, Charlie Davis reached base before Landon Godsey hit a double to left field that put Belmont ahead for good.
An insurance run came in the seventh after another single from Charlie Davis was followed by Brody Langlotz driving him home. Marland picked up the win on the mound after allowing two earned runs over six innings and striking out three batters. Ridge Harvey pitched three innings in relief, giving up only one hit to earn a save.
Jake Maddox led offensively in Game 2 by going 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while Charlie Davis added another hit and scored once.
