The Belmont University women’s tennis team lost 4-0 to New Mexico State in its outdoor home opener at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex on March 20. The Bruins, now holding a 1-11 record, were unable to secure the doubles point before the Aggies clinched the match with straight-set singles victories on courts four through six.
This match was significant as it marked Belmont’s first outdoor home contest of the season. The result leaves the Bruins seeking momentum ahead of their upcoming conference schedule.
In doubles play, New Mexico State’s Dora Kurdi and Whitney Moon won at the third spot with a 6-2 score, securing the opening point for their team. Anna Klimova and Montana Parkinson-Lubold added another win for the Aggies at No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 set against Belmont’s graduate and junior pair. The top doubles tandem for Belmont trailed 5-4 when New Mexico State clinched the point.
During singles action, New Mexico State did not concede more than four combined games in any of their matches at positions four through six. The top three singles matches went unfinished after the Aggies secured victory. At No. 1 singles, Webster led Moon from New Mexico State 3-1 in the second set after dropping the first set, while Tapia-Cruz was tied at 4-4 in her second set against Parkinson-Lubold after losing her first set. Popiol held a promising lead at No. 3 singles when play was halted due to match completion.
Looking ahead, Belmont will host Eastern Kentucky on Sunday morning for its final non-conference matchup before starting Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend.
