U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) spoke on the Senate floor about the impact of the Working Families Tax Cuts, which were signed into law by President Trump eight months ago. According to Blackburn, this legislation has brought changes for Tennesseans and others across the country.

Blackburn stated that the law allocated $150 billion for national defense and $170 billion for border security. She said, “It provided a $150 billion investment in our national defense. That investment has been vital as our brave service members work day and night to defend our nation from the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world.” She also added, “It provided $170 billion for border security, including funding to complete the border wall, build new detention facilities, and hire more agents.”

She claimed that since these investments, “not a single illegal alien has been admitted into our country,” and described the funding as crucial amid what she called a partial shutdown of DHS by Democrats.

The senator emphasized that tax cuts have delivered financial relief for workers, seniors, and families. “True to its name, the Working Families Tax Cuts delivered the largest tax relief for Americans in history. It prevented a $4 trillion tax hike,” Blackburn said. She noted that while some provisions began last year, most Americans are experiencing benefits with the start of the 2026 tax season.

Blackburn highlighted a “$6,000 bonus deduction for our seniors—eliminating taxes on Social Security for 88 percent of recipients.” She continued: “This is a matter of fairness. American workers spend a lifetime paying into the Social Security program through tax withholdings. Why should they have to pay taxes on income funded through their taxes? It makes no sense to tax taxes.” According to her remarks, seniors could save an average of $670 this year due to this provision.

She also pointed out savings for those earning tips or overtime: “With the new tips deduction, single filers will see an average savings of $1,370. Some could save as much as $5,500. And with the new overtime deduction, filers will see $1,440 in average savings.”

Blackburn serves on several Senate committees related to finance and consumer protection issues and represents all of Tennessee in Washington D.C., maintaining offices across multiple cities in her state (official website). Her legislative priorities include lower taxes, border security measures such as those mentioned in her remarks, veterans’ care initiatives, online protections for children (official website), and advocating for limited government (official website).
