House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green opened discussions today on budget reconciliation recommendations which aim to allocate funding for the Department of Homeland Security’s main border security operations. Chairman Green emphasized the importance of fulfilling the Republican majority’s responsibility to enhance border security, reflecting the mandate given to them by the electorate.
Green’s prepared remarks criticized the immigration policies implemented by the Biden-Harris administration. “On January 20, 2021, President Joe Biden launched a relentless, four-year campaign to obliterate America’s sovereign borders,” he stated. Green also claimed that under the previous administration, border enforcement was weakened and millions entered the country illegally.
During the Trump administration, Green noted there was a significant reduction in border apprehensions, attributing these changes to stronger enforcement from the White House. “No, what changed was the White House fulfilling its Constitutional responsibility to enforce and execute the laws passed by Congress,” he said.
The budget recommendations discussed propose completing the construction of a strategically placed border barrier system, which includes not only physical barriers but also integrated technology and infrastructure. “Former San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke told our Committee that the border wall system ‘slows down the people as they come across, and so we have more time to respond and actually make an apprehension,'” stated Green.
Additionally, the recommendations involve hiring more Border Patrol agents and investing in advanced technology for drug interdiction. A grant program, Operation Stonegarden, is intended to assist states and local communities in enhancing their border security.
Green concluded by underscoring the significance of the recommendations, “We are investing in cutting-edge technology to help agents and officers interdict illicit drugs like fentanyl being smuggled through ports of entry.”
