Today, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green issued a statement following the release of data by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The data indicated a significant reduction in border activity, with a 93% decrease in Southwest border apprehensions and an 88% drop in nationwide border encounters in April 2025 compared to the same period last year.
Chairman Green attributed these changes to President Trump’s recent actions regarding border security. He stated, “Americans are safer because of President Trump’s swift and decisive action to end catch-and-release, rescind unlawful Biden-era mass-parole programs, and restore law and order to our nation’s borders.” He emphasized that these measures have led to historically low levels of illegal immigration and improved morale among federal law enforcement officers.
Green criticized the previous administration’s approach to immigration policy, saying, “For four years Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Alejandro Mayorkas ignored not just federal immigration law but the needs of our brave Border Patrol agents and pushed forward with a radical, open-borders agenda.” According to him, under President Trump’s leadership, border patrol agents can now focus on their primary mission of securing the nation’s borders.
He called on Congress to act swiftly to support CBP personnel by providing necessary resources for implementing what he described as “President Trump’s proven border security agenda.” He urged Congress not to let political interests delay progress: “There is no time to hold President Trump’s ‘one big, beautiful bill’ hostage to sectarian political interests. It’s time for Congress to get reconciliation done. We cannot fail to deliver on our promise to the American people to secure our borders and our communities once and for all.”
