Belmont University women’s tennis team lost 6-1 to Drake University on Mar. 29 during a Missouri Valley Conference match at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex in Nashville.
The result marks another setback for the Bruins, who now hold a season record of 2-13 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Despite the loss, several matches were closely contested, with three singles matches going to three sets.
Belmont secured its only point when Tapia-Cruz won her singles match against Kristina Tai with scores of 6-3 and 6-4. In doubles play, Belmont also found success at the top spot as their redshirt freshman and sophomore duo defeated Drake’s Maja Dodik and Jordane Dookie by a score of 6-2. However, Drake claimed victories at No. 2 doubles (6-1) and No. 3 doubles (6-2), giving them an early lead.
In other singles matches, Drake’s Dookie overcame a first-set deficit to defeat Belmont’s junior player with scores of 4-6, 6-1, and 6-2. The Bulldogs clinched the match on court five after Milana Dejanovic beat Belmont’s senior player by scores of 7-5 and 6-4. At both No.1 and No.3 singles positions, Webster and Popiol from Belmont pushed their opponents to third sets but ultimately fell short.
Looking ahead, Belmont will travel next weekend for two away matches: Friday against Illinois State at Normal scheduled for a late afternoon start, followed by Saturday’s contest versus Bradley in Peoria set for an early morning first serve.
