United States Senator Bill Hagerty appeared on Fox Business to discuss several ongoing geopolitical concerns, including the Russia-Ukraine war and U.S. tariff negotiations with China. During his appearance, Hagerty highlighted President Donald Trump’s approach to sanctions and energy policies.
Hagerty commented on Trump’s strategy against Russia, saying, “President Trump has continued not only to retain sanctions in place, but actually enforced them, which the Biden Administration never did.” He noted the importance of putting pressure on Russia through sanctions, specifically pointing out actions against a Chinese refinery that purchases Russian crude oil.
Regarding energy independence, Hagerty suggested that Trump’s vision of “energy dominance for America” adversely affects countries like Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, but benefits U.S. allies.
On the topic of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Hagerty emphasized the importance of ending the war, criticizing an attempt by Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to renegotiate a deal in front of an international audience. “It’s time for both parties, Russia and Ukraine, to get to the table and bring this to an end,” he stated, noting the human cost of the continued conflict. He expressed skepticism about the success of negotiations under the current U.S. administration.
Hagerty also addressed Trump’s policies toward Iran, reflecting on the Abraham Accords and the need for negotiations to curb Iran’s terror regime and nuclear ambitions. He asserted that enforcing sanctions would put Iran under significant economic pressure, making this an opportune moment for diplomacy.
Lastly, Hagerty discussed the tariff negotiations with China, citing past deals requiring China to make significant purchases from the U.S., which were not fully realized. He stressed, “China needs to prove that it’s a reliable partner,” referencing current challenges in U.S.-China relations, including intellectual property concerns and trust issues.
