United States Senator Bill Hagerty introduced two nominees for Assistant Secretary of State positions during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing. Joel Rayburn has been nominated to be the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, while Ambassador Michael DeSombre is the nominee for Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Senator Hagerty emphasized Rayburn’s qualifications, noting his extensive experience in Middle Eastern affairs. “Joel Rayburn’s nomination comes at a pivotal time for the United States in the Middle East and North Africa,” said Hagerty. He highlighted Rayburn’s military background, including his service as an artillery and intelligence officer in the U.S. Army and his work as a strategic intelligence advisor in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Joel could not be better qualified to be the next Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs,” added Hagerty.
Michael DeSombre was praised by Hagerty for his experience in Asia both as a businessman and diplomat. “I am excited that President Trump tapped Michael as his nominee to be the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs,” said Hagerty. DeSombre’s previous role as U.S. Ambassador to Thailand was mentioned, where he used his business acumen to foster economic opportunities between the American and Thai economies.
The nominations come at a critical time with significant challenges and opportunities present in both regions. If confirmed, both nominees are expected to play crucial roles in shaping U.S. foreign policy under President Trump’s administration.
