House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Rand Paul have expressed concerns regarding the Transportation Security Administration’s Quiet Skies program and potential misuse of the Federal Air Marshal Service. In a letter to TSA, they have requested a classified briefing and pertinent documents about the inclusion of Tulsi Gabbard, the current director of national intelligence, in the Quiet Skies program under the Biden-Harris administration.
The correspondence highlights worries about possible screenings conducted by TSA based on political beliefs and other non-security factors. Such actions potentially direct Federal Air Marshals to surveil U.S. citizens who do not pose a credible threat to aviation security. The Chairmen stress the necessity of transparency in intelligence-based criteria used for surveillance missions, especially those that might be based on subjective or ideological factors.
“Recent disclosures suggest that TSA, under the Biden administration, may have engaged in unwarranted screening of individuals based on political beliefs, travel patterns, or other non-security-related factors,” the Chairmen’s letter states. They emphasize the importance of timely responses to oversight requests to ensure fairness and legality in security practices: “The American people deserve to know that the policies governing their security are applied fairly, lawfully, and without political or ideological bias.”
Green and Paul acknowledge the significant responsibilities of TSA in managing national security, while reminding that congressional oversight is vital to prevent infringement on civil liberties. “We are confident that under your leadership, TSA will engage in constructive dialogue and provide the requested information,” they wrote, urging the agency to facilitate a classified briefing for their committees to provide a comprehensive account of the Quiet Skies Program and related activities.
