U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Kelvin Joel Mejia-Romero, a Honduran national convicted of vehicular homicide, after his release from a Tennessee prison.

Mejia-Romero was released from the Northwest Correctional Complex near Memphis before being taken into federal custody. According to the agency’s release, he had completed his sentence for drunk driving that caused a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 24 in Nashville and will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s office reported that Tennessee recorded 2,719 reports involving people not lawfully present in the state who were charged with or convicted of 3,854 offenses in the final three months of 2024. The office said driving under the influence was the most common charge, with 654 arrests.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement publishes statistics on arrests, detainers, removals, and enforcement activity involving noncitizens. The agency says its enforcement work includes cases involving people who pose public safety or national security concerns.

ICE, created in 2003 as part of the Department of Homeland Security, conducts immigration enforcement and criminal investigations through offices in the United States and abroad.
