Jason Witten, a former standout tight end in the National Football League, has been selected for induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026, according to an April 16 announcement by the organization.
Witten’s induction recognizes his significant contributions to football both in Tennessee and nationally. The Hall of Fame aims to honor individuals whose achievements have had a lasting impact on sports in the state.
Brad Willis, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, said, “Jason Witten represents everything great about Tennessee football. From his roots in Elizabethton to his standout career at the University of Tennessee and his remarkable success in the NFL, Jason has built a legacy defined by excellence, toughness, and leadership. We are proud to welcome him into the Class of 2026.”
Witten began his football journey in Elizabethton before playing at the University of Tennessee as a tight end. He was recognized as First-Team All-SEC during his junior year and later drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2003. Over a 17-year NFL career with Dallas, he earned selection to 11 Pro Bowls and became both the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions and games played. He finished with more than 1,200 receptions and over 13,000 receiving yards.
Beyond athletic accomplishments, Witten received the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for community service through initiatives like his SCORE Foundation. Willis said: “Jason’s impact goes far beyond statistics. He has been a role model for generations of athletes, demonstrating what it means to lead with character, give back to others, and represent your home state with pride.”
After retiring from professional play, Witten moved into coaching roles while continuing work supporting young athletes.
The induction ceremony will take place July 11 at Omni Nashville Downtown alongside other honorees including Monica Abbott and Marc Gasol. Tickets are available through TSHF2026.givesmart.com.
