Lipscomb Men’s Basketball head coach Kevin Carroll announced on May 18 several coaching staff changes ahead of the 2026-2027 season. Scott Cherry has been promoted to associate head coach, while Trey Johnson and Sagar Kapoor will join the program as assistant coaches.

Scott Cherry moves into the role of associate head coach after serving as an assistant last season. During the 2025-2026 campaign, Cherry played a key role in guiding players such as Grant Asman and Mateo Esmeraldo to individual honors, with Asman earning First Team All-ASUN recognition and Esmeraldo making Third Team All-ASUN. The team finished with 19 wins and earned a first-round bye in the 2026 ASUN Tournament. Carroll said, “I am excited to announce the promotion of Scott Cherry to Associate Head Coach. From his very first day with us, Scott’s leadership, basketball expertise, and unwavering commitment to our student-athletes have made a profound impact on our program. Having been a head coach himself, Scott brings invaluable experience and perspective that have benefited not only me personally but also our entire staff and team. This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of the positive influence he has had on our program, and I look forward to continuing our work together as we pursue even greater success.”

Trey Johnson joins Lipscomb following his recent position as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern University from 2024 to 2026, where he served as recruiting coordinator and coached standout players like Taje Kelly—Big South Player of the Year—and A’lahn Sumler—First Team Big South honoree—as Charleston Southern achieved its best start in school history last season. Previously, Johnson held roles at Presbyterian College from 2023 to 2024, where he was co-offensive coordinator; Francis Marion University from 2018 to 2019; Lenoir-Rhyne University from 2021 to 2023; and began his career as head student manager at Charleston Southern from 2014 to 2018. Carroll said about Johnson, “We are thrilled to welcome Trey Johnson to our coaching staff… What truly distinguishes Trey is his remarkable gift for building strong, authentic relationships—a quality that perfectly reflects our program’s commitment… We are excited about the positive influence Trey will have on our team…”

Sagar Kapoor arrives after serving most recently at Northwest Florida State College (2023–26), helping lead them to become Panhandle Conference Runner-Ups in 2024 while coaching multiple all-conference selections including one player who earned conference player of the year honors. Prior stops include Pensacola State College (2019–23), where he coached ten all-conference players over four seasons; Gardner-Webb University (Director of Basketball Operations/Graduate Assistant) during their run to win the Big South Conference Tournament Championship in 2019; and East Carolina University (student manager). Carroll said, “We are excited to welcome Sagar… He possesses a keen understanding of where the game is now and where it’s headed… In his primary role of general manager, Sagar will be instrumental in roster management… Sagar’s leadership and vision will be invaluable as we continue to elevate our program.”

Carroll also confirmed that Jack McMahon and Byron Sanford would return for their second season on staff with enhanced roles.
