United States Senator Bill Hagerty has introduced a new legislative bill aimed at ending Washington, D.C.’s status as a sanctuary city. The proposal, known as the District of Columbia Federal Immigration Compliance Act, seeks to eliminate the district’s sanctuary laws and enforce compliance with requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Representative Clay Higgins is presenting similar legislation in the United States House of Representatives.
Senator Hagerty expressed his concerns about Washington, D.C.’s current policies, stating, “Unconscionable that our nation’s capital would facilitate illegality and thwart federal law enforcement efforts.” He emphasized the importance of alignment with President Trump’s efforts to enforce immigration laws.
Congressman Clay Higgins echoed these sentiments, highlighting the implications of sanctuary policies. “Sanctuary policies have devastating real-life consequences,” said Congressman Higgins. He further supported the legislative efforts by asserting that Washington, D.C., as the nation’s capital, should prioritize safety and align with federal laws. Higgins also noted Congress’s constitutional authority to address the city’s sanctuary status.
The proposed legislation prohibits Washington, D.C., from enacting any laws or practices that limit communication or cooperation with federal immigration authorities. It specifically aims to ensure compliance with DHS or ICE requests regarding detained illegal aliens.
The proposal underscores a broader debate concerning sanctuary cities and their role in federal immigration law enforcement.
