A verbal dispute between two acquaintances as they were leaving Vibes nightclub on Demonbreun Street at 12:50 a.m. today led to one of them resorting to gunfire in the parking lot. That man was then fatally shot by security guards who told detectives they were acting in defense of others in the area. The deceased is identified as Patrick Charles, 33, of Nashville.

The investigation to this point shows that Charles was inside Vibes with his sister and his sister’s boyfriend. Charles’ sister and her boyfriend got into an argument, eventually leading to an argument between Charles and the boyfriend. As they came out of the building and onto the sidewalk, a security guard in that immediate area said he overheard the men make threats of retrieving guns.

Charles and his sister’s boyfriend went to their separate vehicles. As the boyfriend began to drive out of the parking lot, Charles was observed shooting at the car. Two security guards, Beck Wandrei, 26, and Kelvin Torres, 22, then fired on Charles. He was hit at least once and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Wandrei and Torres told detectives they continued observing the two men to make sure the arguing didn’t escalate, and that when Charles began shooting, they fired at him in defense of others.

Once completed, detectives will staff this investigation with the District Attorney’s Office.
