Michele Reneau, a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives, shared updates on legislative efforts through her Twitter account on February 5, 2026. The tweets highlight two separate initiatives: one to restrict artificial intelligence from being classified as persons under state law and another to protect Tennesseans’ rights related to food production.

In a tweet posted at 16:49 UTC, Reneau questioned the appropriateness of artificial intelligence running for elected office and referenced proposed legislation. “Should AI be allowed to run for elected office? They have already tried. This is exactly why Senator Mark Pody and I filed HB 849 to ensure AI, algorithms, and machines cannot be classified as ‘persons’ under Tennessee law. Later that day at 17:22 UTC, Reneau announced her collaboration with Senator Adam Lowe on another legislative proposal focused on food autonomy in Tennessee. “Proud to file HJR780 with @jadamlowe. This constitutional amendment protects Tennesseans’ right to grow, raise, and procure their own food.” (February 5, 2026).

A follow-up tweet at the same time further explained the rationale behind this initiative: “Whether it’s a backyard garden or a working farm, Tennesseans should be free to grow and raise food without unnecessary interference. This is about food freedom, personal choice, and the Make America Healthy Again movement.” (February 5, 2026).

The move to prohibit artificial intelligence from being considered legal persons aligns with broader national discussions regarding the legal status of non-human entities amid rapid technological advances. Several states have begun reviewing similar proposals in response to developments in AI capabilities.

Efforts such as HJR780 reflect ongoing debates over individual rights concerning food production and access in both urban and rural communities. Constitutional amendments on these topics have been introduced in other states as part of movements supporting agricultural self-sufficiency.
