Ascension Saint Thomas announced on Apr. 8 that its “Mission in Motion” mobile mammogram bus is providing free breast cancer screenings to women throughout Middle Tennessee. The program, which began in 2011, has conducted approximately 25,000 screenings and focuses on reaching both urban and rural communities where access to traditional healthcare may be limited.
The initiative addresses the need for accessible preventative health care by offering cost-free screenings through scheduled appointments and walk-ins. This service is funded by donations and grants, allowing women who may lack insurance or financial resources to receive vital health checks at no cost.
Last year alone, the program helped eight women detect breast cancer early. In addition to initial screenings, Ascension Saint Thomas collaborates with the state Department of Health to provide financial support for follow-up diagnostic tests and biopsies when suspicious results are found. This ensures that patients have a pathway to further care if needed.
Due to high demand for these services, the Mission in Motion bus is currently booked through the end of the year. Organizers are now seeking additional donations with hopes of purchasing a second vehicle so they can expand their reach and continue promoting early detection among more women in need.
