Monty Fritts, a candidate for governor in Tennessee and member of the American Legion, used his social media platform to make campaign promises and commemorate Memorial Day.
On May 24, 2026, Fritts announced his intention to eliminate the state’s grocery sales tax if elected. In his post he stated, “As your next governor in Tennessee, I will commit to removing the state Grocery Sales Tax. We should leave that money in YOUR pocket! Vote for Monty Fritts on August 6th”.
The following day, May 25, which was Memorial Day, Fritts reflected on those who have served alongside him and honored their sacrifices. He wrote, “On this May 25, 2026 Memorial Day I reflect back to men and women I knew and served alongside, particularly those who gave their life in service to America. These men, true Tennessee Volunteers, placed a great sacrifice upon the altar of Liberty. We must honor them and their”.
Later that day, Fritts shared about addressing young delegates at TN Boys State as an American Legion member and Post 50 Rockwood adjutant. He posted: “I was honored to speak about Christ’s calling on these young men to be servant leaders at the TN Boys State… to remember the sacrifices of those before them. As an American Legion member and Post 50 Rockwood adjutant it was truly an honor to address the delegates.”
Tennessee is among a small number of states that impose a sales tax on groceries. The issue has been discussed by policymakers over recent years due to its impact on household budgets.
Fritts’ public reflections coincide with his campaign efforts ahead of Tennessee’s gubernatorial election scheduled for August 6th.
