Representative John Gillespie, who serves in the Tennessee House of Representatives, shared updates on community events and public acknowledgments through his Twitter account in mid-May 2026.
On May 16, Gillespie posted about attending a major local event: “We had a great afternoon at the Memphis in May World Barbecue Cooking Contest. We also got to spend some time with @SenatorMarkDaly, Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann. Tomorrow is the last day, come enjoy some of the best Barbecue on the globe!” This tweet highlighted both the festival’s significance for Memphis and his meeting with Senator Mark Daly from Ireland.
Later that same day, Gillespie marked Armed Forces Day with a tribute to military personnel: “The strength of our nation rests on the shoulders of our armed forces. Armed Forces Day honors the sacrifice and service of those who defend our country and protect our way of life.” Armed Forces Day is an annual observance in the United States honoring members of all branches of the military for their service.
On May 18, Gillespie congratulated recent graduates from Shelby County: “Congratulations to the newest graduates from Shelby County! It’s no easy task to gain an education, so whether you’re earning a diploma or a degree, we celebrate your hard work and determination. Tennessee is better because you’re here with us.” Shelby County includes Memphis and is one of Tennessee’s most populous counties.
Gillespie’s posts reflect ongoing engagement with constituents through recognition of community events, national observances such as Armed Forces Day—which has been celebrated annually since 1950—and support for educational achievement within his district.
