Former basketball player Ron Mercer has been named to the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026. The announcement was made by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals who have significantly influenced sports in Tennessee.

Brad Willis, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, stated: “Ron Mercer’s excellence at every level of basketball is a testament to his talent and determination. From Nashville’s high school courts to national championships in college and a successful professional career, Ron’s legacy is one that inspires Tennessee athletes and fans alike.”

Mercer, originally from Nashville, earned the title of Tennessee Mr. Basketball twice while attending Goodpasture Christian School in Madison. He later played for Oak Hill Academy in Virginia before joining the University of Kentucky Wildcats. At Kentucky, he contributed to the team’s 1996 NCAA National Championship victory and received recognition as SEC Player of the Year and Consensus First-Team All-American in 1997.

After college, Mercer was chosen sixth overall in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. His eight-year NBA career included time with several teams such as the Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and New Jersey Nets. In 1998, he was selected for the NBA All-Rookie First Team and had notable scoring performances throughout his career.

Willis added: “Ron’s impact on the court — whether leading Kentucky to national prominence or competing at the highest professional level — reflects the competitive spirit of Tennessee sports. His induction celebrates a career that Tennessee can be proud of for generations.”

Mercer joins other announced inductees for 2026 including Monica Abbott, Jennifer Azzi, Matt Cain, Mike Clary, Reggie Cobb (posthumously), Antone Davis, Kermit Davis, Bubba Luckett, Charles McRae, David Price, and Pete Weber. Additional members will be revealed in upcoming weeks.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for July 11, 2026 at Omni Nashville Downtown and is presented by the Tennessee Titans. Tickets and sponsorships are available through TSHF2026.givesmart.com.

The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1966 and honors various contributors to sports within the state while promoting healthy habits among youth through its programs.

Since it began operations in January 2004 funded solely by sales revenue from its products—the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation has generated over $8.1 billion for education initiatives such as scholarships and after-school programs across Tennessee.
