Senator Marsha Blackburn, representing Tennessee in the U.S. Senate, has recently used her social media platform to address issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies at universities and federal law enforcement funding.
On July 23, 2025, Blackburn posted on X that “Similarly, an employee at @UTKnoxville noted that they’re playing a ‘chess game’ to continue implementing DEI policies and ensure ‘DEI is protected.'” She followed this statement with another post on the same day: “We will continue to shine a light on those trying to subvert the agenda Americans gave President Trump a mandate to enact. DEI is discriminatory, divisive, un-American, and it has to stop.”
The following day, July 24, 2025, Blackburn commented on immigration policy and federal deployment costs: “Sanctuary states and blue city mayors want to stop President Trump from enforcing the law, leading to chaos and lawlessness. Americans in other states should not pay for their refusal to restore law and order. We must pass my State Accountability for Federal Deployment Costs Act.”
DEI initiatives have been a subject of national debate in recent years. In Tennessee specifically, state lawmakers have introduced measures aimed at restricting or eliminating DEI programs within public higher education institutions. These legislative efforts reflect broader discussions occurring across several states regarding the role of DEI in academic settings.
Regarding sanctuary policies referenced by Blackburn in her third post, several U.S. cities and states have adopted “sanctuary” status by limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. This approach has led some lawmakers—including Senator Blackburn—to propose legislation addressing how federal resources are allocated when local jurisdictions decline participation in certain enforcement activities.
Senator Marsha Blackburn has consistently voiced opposition to both DEI programs within educational institutions and sanctuary policies at the state and municipal levels.
