United States Senator Bill Hagerty recently appeared on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures to discuss key issues such as trade negotiations, the debt ceiling, and federal spending cuts. As a member of several Senate committees and a former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Hagerty provided insights into these ongoing matters.
Regarding trade negotiations with China, Hagerty emphasized the importance of holding China accountable for previous agreements. He expressed optimism about current discussions in Switzerland and praised David’s appointment as ambassador: “He’s going to be a great ambassador representing America’s interest with China.”
On the topic of the debt ceiling, Hagerty voiced confidence in President Trump’s approach: “I have a lot [of] faith in President Trump’s ability to get long-term effect achieved here.” He indicated support for extending the debt ceiling to allow time for economic improvements.
Hagerty also addressed wasteful government spending, particularly foreign aid: “There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity to clean this up.” He supported Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s efforts to manage foreign aid more effectively and stressed the need for transparency.
Discussing potential trade deals with Japan, Hagerty highlighted Japan’s strategic position: “Japan certainly has the opportunity to be next… They’re the third largest economy in the world.”
The India-Pakistan conflict was another point of concern for Hagerty. He commended JD Vance’s role in easing tensions through personal diplomacy with Prime Minister Modi: “JD Vance stepped up in a remarkably admirable way.”
Finally, on federal budget reconciliation, Hagerty noted that significant spending cuts are under consideration: “The Senate is actually talking more like two trillion in cuts.”
