Senator Marsha Blackburn posted a series of tweets on July 23, 2025, raising concerns about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs at Tennessee universities. Blackburn, who represents Tennessee in the U.S. Senate, alleged that some university employees are concealing DEI initiatives by renaming or hiding them.
In her first tweet, Blackburn stated: “In so many ways, Tennessee universities lead the nation in high-quality education, but woke activist employees threaten to tarnish the reputations of the universities they work for by concealing DEI programs. Take a look at what’s hiding in plain sight “ (July 23, 2025).
She continued by referencing Vanderbilt University: “An employee at @VanderbiltU admitted to “flying under the radar” when it comes to DEI. Thanks for the shoutout, Janet.” (July 23, 2025).
In a third tweet posted on the same day, Blackburn focused on Belmont University: “In this video, a @BelmontUniv employee was caught on camera admitting they renamed their DEI program to “Hope, Unity, and Belonging.”” (July 23, 2025).
Debates over DEI programs have become increasingly prominent in higher education across the United States. In recent years, several states have introduced or passed legislation restricting public funding for such initiatives or requiring increased transparency about their existence and purpose within public institutions.
Tennessee has seen similar discussions regarding DEI policies in its universities. State lawmakers have considered measures aimed at limiting or regulating diversity programming within higher education settings.
