Tennessee State Senator Paul Bailey said on Mar. 21 that two pieces of legislation he sponsored have advanced in the Senate, focusing on protecting foster families’ constitutional rights and updating auto industry regulations.

Bailey said these measures are intended to safeguard Tennesseans’ freedoms while modernizing business practices to better fit the current economic landscape.

One bill aims to ensure that foster parents are not required to give up their Second Amendment rights when caring for children. “This bill makes it clear: law-abiding foster families should not face unnecessary government intrusion over legally owned firearms. While safety requirements remain in place, the state cannot create an inventory of firearms or require access to locked storage during routine inspections,” Bailey said. He added, “At the end of the day, Tennesseans should never have to choose between helping a child in need and exercising their constitutional rights.”

Another bill seeks changes in Tennessee’s automobile franchise and regulatory laws. Bailey described this as bringing “clearer rules for how manufacturers, dealers, and automobile-related businesses operate.” He said this would result in fewer ambiguities, more consistency, and a system that reflects today’s economy rather than outdated regulations.

The Senate also moved forward with legislation establishing a fund dedicated to children’s mental health and online safety. According to Bailey, if companies are found responsible for harming minors online, recovered funds will be directed toward services such as mental health support, suicide prevention initiatives, and law enforcement efforts focused on youth protection.

Additional measures progressing through the legislature include recognizing rescue squads receiving state support, expanding protections for arson investigators facing long-term health risks, and strengthening consumer protection by addressing hidden fees and privacy concerns.

Bailey concluded by saying he remains committed to supporting Tennessee families and communities: “As always, I’ll continue working to protect Tennessee families, support our communities, and keep our state moving in the right direction.”
