Belmont University Softball Falls to South Carolina in Final Game at the Mercer Bear Classic

Belmont University Softball fell 5-4 in an exciting matchup against SEC opponent the University of South Carolina. 

Brenna Blume posted her third career home run to take the lead over South Carolina in the fourth. 

Maya Johnson earned the start against the Gamecocks. In 5 innings Johnson produced 3 strikeouts to keep the Bruins in the game. 

How it Happened 
The Gamecocks set the tone for the with a solo home run from their leadoff hitter Jordan Fabian. 

Belmont quickly countered in the second to tie the game. Kailey Brown earned a walk as the first Bruin on base for the day. Emily Cockrill moved her to second, she was brought home by a Kaley Varner hard hit single to even out the game. 

The Bruins had a fantastic third inning to hold the Gamecocks to 1. Cockrill began a double play with a flick to Nicole Hughes who reacted quickly to make the play at first. Johnson Closed out the inning with a strikeout.

Momentum on their side Baie Ensio and Emily Cockrill each earned a single to put 2 on for the Bruins. Blume sent out a 3 RBI home run to take the lead, 4-1. 

Belmont successfully held this lead in the fourth with a strikeout and 2 fly outs. 

South Carolina came back to tie the game again in the fifth on their own 3 RBI home run for Jen Cummings. 

A hard fought battle on the field today, Belmont allowed 1 run in the sixth that ended up being the game winning run, 5-4. 

Belmont has proved their strength in the midst of the beginning of the season, more big things to come from this crew. 

Up Next:
The Bruins will face Tennessee, Appalachian State, and Jacksonville State at the Tennessee Classic.
