Tennessee State lost 9-4 to Eastern Illinois in the Ohio Valley Conference series opener on May 1 at Williams Field. The Tigers produced one of their best offensive performances of the conference season, recording 11 hits and multiple scoring rallies.

The game matters for Tennessee State as it reflects improvements in both offense and defense despite a challenging season. The Tigers, now with a record of 2-36 overall and 2-23 in conference play, showed progress by matching Eastern Illinois in hits for much of the contest.

Tennessee State took an early lead when Hailey Hunt delivered a two-RBI single up the middle, bringing home Alexis Woods and Noelani Wilkerson. Eastern Illinois responded quickly with two home runs to take control, but Tennessee State continued to apply pressure throughout the game.

Woods led Tennessee State at the plate with three hits in three at-bats, scoring twice and adding a stolen base. Hunt finished with four RBIs on two hits, accounting for all four Tiger runs. Dani James and Mariyah Brown each contributed two hits as well. Defensively, Tennessee State did not commit any errors during the game.

After Eastern Illinois extended its lead in the fifth inning, Hunt drove in Woods and Wilkerson again with a two-run single to left center during the sixth inning. In pitching relief, Tianna Salcido and Kristian Holder limited further damage from Eastern Illinois late in the game.

Despite losing by five runs, Tennessee State demonstrated resilience against one of the top teams in their conference. The team will continue its series against Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
