Tennessee State University’s track and field teams will compete in the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt on May 1–2, according to an April 29 announcement. The event will take place at the Vanderbilt Outdoor Track in Nashville.
The meet serves as a key opportunity for Tennessee State athletes to prepare for the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships later in May. The Tigers aim to build on their recent performances as they enter this late-season competition.
At their previous outing during the Georgia Tech Invitational, Tennessee State’s men’s team saw Kylen Thorps lead in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.16 seconds, followed by Brian Townsend and Bobby Teixeira. Joshua McClendon posted a strong result in the 400 meters, while Devin Jones led middle-distance runners in the 800 meters alongside teammates Robert Hooper, Delton White, and Aaron Davis. In sprints, Caleb Joshway finished the 200 meters in 21.23 seconds.
The men’s relay squads also performed well; the “A” team of Devin Jones, Caleb Joshway, Kylen Thorps, and Joshua McClendon completed the 4×400-meter relay in 3:14.37 minutes. In field events, Christian White achieved a long jump of 6.74 meters while Kolby Jones recorded marks of both 6.60 meters (long jump) and 14.14 meters (triple jump). Gabriel Deng added a triple jump mark of 13.85 meters.
On the women’s side at Georgia Tech Invitational, Serenity Harry led with a time of 24.71 seconds in the 200 meters while Kaymin Sales ran both sprints and middle distances effectively alongside Syncere Harrison and Sydney McGee.
Field highlights for women included Carolyn McRee’s shot put throw of 12.27 meters and Kaylin White’s long jump mark of nearly six meters.
The Music City Challenge will begin Friday morning with field events before running events commence Saturday afternoon at Vanderbilt Outdoor Track located at 2600 Children’s Way in Nashville; admission is $15 with children two years old or younger admitted free.
Spectators are advised to use designated parking areas such as the Highland Avenue entrance to park at the nearby garage and follow pedestrian signage into spectator seating zones only; outside food or large bags are not permitted on site per event policy guidelines.
Looking ahead after this weekend’s competition, Tennessee State will turn its focus toward postseason preparations for conference championships scheduled from May 14–16.
