Vanderbilt University’s men’s tennis team will face off against the University of Tennessee in their Southeastern Conference home opener on Monday. The match, to be held in Nashville, marks the 94th meeting between the two teams since their first encounter in 1927.
Vanderbilt currently holds an 8-3 record this season and is seeking to break a six-match losing streak against Tennessee. The Commodores’ last victory over the Volunteers was in 2018. Vanderbilt returns home after a close 4-3 loss to Mississippi State, a match that lasted four hours.
Tennessee arrives with a 6-5 record and is also looking to recover from its recent defeat by Kentucky, where they lost 5-2. Alejandro Moreno is ranked No. 58 nationally in singles for Tennessee, while Jose Garcia leads his team with seven singles wins this season. In doubles play, Tennessee has experimented with various pairings but has struggled recently, losing three consecutive doubles points and winning only five during dual matches.
Both Vanderbilt and Tennessee share identical records against common opponents: each secured a win over Michigan State and suffered a loss to Wake Forest.
The Commodores are aiming to continue their strong performance at home, having won ten straight matches at their venue—their longest such streak since 2018. Senior Nathan Cox remains undefeated in dual singles matches this year with a perfect 10-0 record following his latest win over Raphael Vaksmann of Mississippi State. Additionally, Vanderbilt has managed to secure back-to-back doubles points for only the second time this season.
The match between Vanderbilt and Tennessee is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m., with live streaming and statistics available online. Updates can be found by following @VandyMTennis on Instagram and X.
