The landscape for college athletics has shifted as a federal settlement now allows schools to share revenue directly with student-athletes for the first time. The settlement also requires the NCAA to pay $2.8 billion in retroactive damages over 10 years to athletes who participated from 2016 onward.

Beginning in 2022, after extensive legal and legislative action, athletes were given the ability to earn money from their name, image and likeness due to changes in state laws and NCAA policies.
