United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) appeared on Fox Business to discuss the ongoing Senate border deal negotiations and the efforts to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Hagerty expressed his concerns about the lack of good faith from the Biden administration in the negotiations.
Hagerty acknowledged the efforts of his colleagues in working on the legislation but expressed his disappointment at not being able to see the text of the deal. He emphasized the importance of good faith in negotiations and criticized President Biden for undoing the progress made by former President Trump in securing the border. Hagerty stated, "Joe Biden came in and intentionally undid all of that. He’s shown no good faith to try to step back up to say he was wrong, to put back in place the border wall, to begin rebuilding that again, to put back in place ‘Remain in Mexico,’ third-party safe agreements—he’s undone all of that."
Regarding the impeachment efforts against Secretary Mayorkas, Hagerty applauded the House of Representatives for taking action. He highlighted the issues caused by the administration's approach to border security, including the influx of illegal immigration and the rise in drug overdoses. Hagerty criticized Mayorkas for his evasive answers during hearings, stating, "He says the exact opposite of the truth every time. It’s high time to deal with him. In the private sector, he would’ve been fired long ago."
When asked about the border deal negotiations within the Senate Republican conference, Hagerty expressed concern about the lack of unity. He stated, "Based on what people are seeing, what people are hearing, we’re divided right now." Hagerty added that if the proposed deal does not align with the principles of Senate Republicans, he would prefer it not to see the light of day.
In summary, Senator Bill Hagerty voiced his concerns about the ongoing border deal negotiations and the need for good faith in the process. He applauded the House of Representatives' efforts to impeach Secretary Mayorkas and criticized his handling of border security. Hagerty also expressed his concerns about the lack of unity within the Senate Republican conference regarding the proposed border deal.
