United States Senator Bill Hagerty recently appeared on America's Newsroom on Fox News to discuss the ongoing peace negotiations led by President Donald Trump, aimed at ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Hagerty, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, expressed optimism about the progress being made.
"President [Emmanuel] Macron flew here yesterday," Hagerty noted, indicating significant diplomatic activity. He added that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would also be visiting the United States soon. "I think we’re on the precipice of a deal," he stated, citing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's belief that they are close to an agreement.
Hagerty emphasized Trump's approach to resolving the conflict, contrasting it with former President Joe Biden's strategy. "What President Trump wants to do is bring an end to this now," he said. According to Hagerty, Trump is not just following previous policies but is instead trying to negotiate directly with Russia for a resolution.
Discussing Trump's negotiating tactics against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hagerty highlighted Trump's focus on maintaining pressure through sanctions and energy policy changes. "President Trump has not lifted any sanctions on Putin," he remarked, pointing out plans to revive projects like the Keystone Pipeline.
Hagerty also touched upon potential economic benefits from a successful deal. He mentioned opportunities related to critical minerals in Russia and Ukraine that could favor U.S. interests over those of China. "I think President Trump sees that as well and wants to make certain that the United States taxpayer benefits," he explained.
