Today, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD, released a statement following the conviction of Victor Martinez-Hernandez for the murder of Rachel Morin, a mother of five from Maryland. Martinez-Hernandez, identified as an illegal alien from El Salvador, was found guilty on Monday.
Chairman Green emphasized the impact of immigration policies under the current administration. “Now that justice has been served to Rachel Morin’s killer, we remember her and hold her family, especially her five children, and all the families of victims of illegal alien crime in our prayers,” he stated. He criticized the policies for allowing approximately two million unauthorized entries at the Southwest border over four years, claiming that the perpetrator was one of these entrants.
The Committee, according to Green, was "honored to have Rachel’s mother, Patty, provide courageous testimony last Congress on her loss, opening the eyes of Americans across the country to the true cost of the border crisis." Green affirmed the Committee's continued efforts to prevent similar incidents. “The Committee is working tirelessly, alongside the Trump administration, to ensure it never happens again, and that other families never have to experience this heartache," he assured.
Background context was provided, highlighting a testimony by Patty Morin, Rachel's mother. She shared her experience relating to the suspect, whose capture took ten months using DNA analysis, noting his prior offenses in Los Angeles. Her statement challenged the safety assurances of border security, remarking, "They say that the borders are safe. We live 1,800 miles away from the Southern border. They’re not safe." Patty Morin gave a heartfelt account of her daughter's life, describing her as "vibrant, vivacious, outgoing... a mom to five children... a businesswoman." She expressed concern over criminals being allowed into the country and impacting communities, stating, “They are bringing criminals into our country... our people are dying.”
