Fisk University Athletics Director, Corrinne Tarver, is excited to announce the recent hire of Terry Rhodes as the Head Coach for the cross country and track and field programs. In addition, Coach Rhodes will serve as the men's and women's coach for both sports.
"It was evident during the hiring process that Coach Rhodes is passionate about building successful programs. He prioritizes the student experience, which aligns with our mission here at Fisk University," said Athletic Director Corrinne Tarver.
Rhodes comes to Fisk University after spending the last three years overseeing the track and field and cross country programs at Fort Valley State University, where he grew the program to over 80 athletes. In addition, he had multiple all-conference and highly ranked athletes. During the covid transitional year, his team won the conference championship on both the men's and women's sides, and his cross country teams had the most decisive finish in program history. Notably, his women's squad ranked 9th overall as the best HBCU team in the nation.
Before his time at Fort Valley, Rhodes was the assistant coach at Jackson State. While at Jackson State, Rhodes coached multiple Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship-scoring athletes, including a conference champion runner-up. During his two seasons leading the women's cross country team, the Tigers improved six places from tenth to fourth within the SWAC. He was also in charge of recruiting for Jackson State, where he successfully signed regional and national-ranked high school athletes.
"I am looking to resurrect then build up on a great legacy at Fisk University," said Rhodes. "I plan to focus on building a program with the drive to succeed academically and athletically."
