The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (3-3) went on the road and fell 80-65 to No. 6 Union University (4-0) on Monday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
THE SERIES
Against Union, the Trojans trail 6-37 in the all-time series. The last meeting was on February 23, 2012. The last win for the Trojans was a 69-63 win in January of 2007. This was the first official meeting in the NCAA Division II era after the teams played for a couple of decades in the NAIA and the TranSouth Athletic Conference.
THE FLOW
Union started on the upper hand as they jumped out to a 13-6 lead early in the first quarter. The Trojans then scored the following seven points to tie it at 13-13 with 4:26 left. But Union pulled ahead and finished the first quarter up 28-20. The Trojans got the first two buckets of the second quarter and would come within 33-31 with 3:12 left in the half, following another 7-0 run capped off by five points from Bayleigh Carmichel.
In the third quarter, both teams matched each other shot for shot. Union pulled ahead, but the Trojans fought back with a 10-3 run led by four points from Keeley Carter and a three-pointer by Faith Wilken that made it 50-47 with 3:06 left in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Union built up their lead, but the Trojans caught up by scoring eight straight points scored by Emma Palmer. Union responded with three straight three-pointers to regain their big lead late in the fourth. Time would run out before the Trojans could respond.
THE PLAYERS
Keeley Carter led the Trojans with 17 points and seven rebounds. She also had four assists. Bayleigh Carmichel had 13 points and four rebounds. Emma Palmer had 15 points and seven rebounds.
THE TEAMS
The Trojans shot 35.9% (23-64) from the floor, 23.8% (5-21) from three-point range, and 73.7% (14-19) from the free-throw line. The Trojans outrebounded Union 40-36.
