United States Senator Bill Hagerty appeared on CNN News Central to express his support for Pete Hegseth's nomination as Secretary of Defense. Hagerty emphasized the importance of backing President Donald Trump's choice and ensuring a seamless transition for Trump's administration.
Hagerty stated, "I think it's very clear, Phil. Pete spoke with President Trump this morning, and President Trump, again, indicated his support. I've been behind Pete from the very beginning; he's actually been using my office as a base as he meets with other Senators." He praised Hegseth for handling pressure and aiming to reform the Pentagon's focus and recruitment challenges.
Regarding Hegseth's reception among lawmakers, Hagerty mentioned, "I was just with Pete, meeting with a large group of House members, and he had an ovation that was resounding." He noted that support for Hegseth is growing as people recognize his efforts to address issues within the Pentagon.
Hagerty dismissed speculation about potential replacements for Hegseth as unproductive. He urged others to support Trump's nominee promptly to prepare for the upcoming administration.
Discussing media attention on Hegseth in Washington, Hagerty remarked on the tendency to challenge Trump's nominees due to their intent to bring change. "The reason for that is President Trump wants to disrupt Washington. He wants to see real change take place," he said.
