United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) expressed his concerns about the growing threat of fentanyl and other illicit drugs during a hearing on Capitol Hill. Hagerty emphasized the impact of these drugs on Tennesseans, stating that his state has the second-highest mortality rate in the nation, with the majority of overdoses linked to illicit fentanyl.

Hagerty attributed the influx of fentanyl to the smuggling operations across the southern border. He explained that Chinese precursors are used to manufacture fentanyl in Mexico before being smuggled into the United States. Customs and Border Protection seized a staggering 26,000 pounds of fentanyl at the border in fiscal year 2023, highlighting the enormity of the problem.

The senator highlighted the disconnect between policymakers in Washington and the realities faced by American citizens. He noted that the fentanyl epidemic has claimed numerous lives but is often overlooked by those in the nation's capital.

During the hearing, Hagerty engaged with Jason "Jelly Roll" DeFord, a prominent Tennessean and CMA's New Artist of the Year. He sought DeFord's perspective on addressing the demand for fentanyl. DeFord emphasized the need for proper education and resources to combat the issue. He highlighted that Nashville, in particular, has been severely impacted, ranking as the second most dangerous city for fentanyl-related deaths.

Hagerty also discussed the issue with Patrick Yoes, the National President of the Fraternal Order of Police. They both agreed that communities must hold criminals accountable for fentanyl crimes to make a meaningful impact. Yoes stressed the importance of removing individuals who prey on communities from the streets, as it directly affects the quality of life in those areas.

In conclusion, Hagerty emphasized the urgent need to address the fentanyl crisis. The grave threat it poses to communities, particularly in Tennessee, demands immediate action. The senator called for a comprehensive approach that tackles both the supply and demand sides of the issue to effectively combat the devastating consequences of fentanyl on American streets.
